I see red Xs in the message body when I view or open a message.
To help protect your privacy, Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 is configured by default to block downloading of external content from the Internet. Junk e-mail senders have used the capability to link to external servers for content to their advantage by including something called a "Web beacon" in e-mail messages. A Web beacon notifies the Web server when you read or preview the message, validating the e-mail address to the junk e-mail sender, which can result in more junk e-mail messages being sent to you.
If the e-mail message is from someone you trust, and you expected to receive the message, you can choose to download the blocked images or other content. Click the InfoBar at the top of the message, or right-click the blocked image. On the menu, click Download Pictures.
If you regularly receive e-mail messages from this person, you can choose to always download pictures and other content in e-mail messages you receive from this person by adding the sender’s e-mail address to your Safe Senders List. To do this, right-click the blocked image and select an option on the shortcut menu to update your Safe Senders to include the sender’s e-mail address. Outlook always downloads external content in e-mail messages from people or domains on the Safe Senders List.

When you edit, forward, or reply to a message that references external content, your computer will again try to download the content. By default, Outlook is configured to display a warning. If you proceed, the blocked content will be downloaded and included in the reply or forwarded message. You can turn off these warnings but this is not recommended.

(However, e-mail messages from or to e-mail addresses or domain names on the Safe Senders and Safe Recipients Lists are treated as exceptions and the blocked content will be downloaded.) Junk e-mail senders have used the capability to link to external servers for content to their advantage by including something called a "Web beacon" in e-mail messages. A Web beacon notifies the Web server when you read or preview the message, validating the e-mail address to the junk e-mail sender, which can result in more junk e-mail being sent to you.
In the case of legitimate messages you receive, you can download pictures and other content on a per-message basis by clicking the InfoBar or by right-clicking a blocked image.
To make sure that content is automatically downloaded whenever you receive the newsletter, you can select an option on the shortcut menu of a blocked image to update your Safe Senders or Safe Recipients List to include the e-mail address or domain that the newsletter was sent from or to. To do this, right-click the blocked image and select an option on the shortcut menu to update your Safe Senders to include the sender’s e-mail address or domain. It is best to specify an e-mail address as a Safe Sender, but if a newsletter is frequently sent from different e-mail addresses, you may want to instead add the sender’s domain. Outlook always downloads external content in e-mail messages from e-mail addresses or domains on the Safe Senders List.
Another option is to add the sender's domain to your Trusted Sites zone to always display content on any server in that domain. If the blocked images are on a server in another domain, adding the sender's domain to the Trusted Sites zone will not allow those images to be automatically downloaded.
Some content in the message is linked externally and must be downloaded to display the images. However, you can only choose to display blocked content in a message when at least one item that was blocked is a picture. For example, if the blocked content is a sound, it is not downloaded, and you cannot directly download the blocked content.
In this scenario, to include blocked content, in the open message, on the View menu, click View in Internet Zone.
